Teachers, you are amazing. You study, you plan, you prepare. Then you teach, you share, you care! Every day, you work hard to help students learn and understand information. Then you help them apply and analyze what they have learned. And you do this with students of many different learning levels and styles. All this, while creating a classroom where everyone is valued, appreciated and loved. Yes, loved.
It is not easy. I know. So I wanted to make your SOL life maybe just a little bit easier... and hopefully more enjoyable.
While planning, researching, writing and illustrating these books, I kept in mind the RBT: Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy levels and the Multiple Intelligences. As a child who struggled to read, I understand that not all children have strong linguistic skills. However, by creating activities that provide for multiple learning styles, I hope to make this SOL information reachable to all students. I taught in Virginia elementary schools for 22 years and have been an educational writer, professional storyteller and children’s author for the past 15 years. I love providing help and support to teachers and students across Virginia with my SOL books and materials.
So teach on, teachers! I love you.
After graduating from JMU with an early childhood education degree, Barb Lawson became a Kindergarten teacher. She loved kids, she loved to sing and she loved telling stories so things worked out well in the Kindergarten world. She taught for 22 years and had a blast! Then, Barb got the opportunity to write teacher materials for some major educational publishers. So off she went, into the world of writing. That was great, but Barb still wanted to work with kids, so for the past 16 years she has been a professional storyteller. She LOVES it! In 2014, Barb was selected by the Virginia Commission for the Arts to be one of their Performing Artists, traveling across Virginia telling stories and teaching workshops. In 2000, Barb founded Barb Lawson Books (formally Fun Stuff Publications), a company that produces books and materials to help teachers with Virginia Standards of Learning.
